Yugadi is one of the most
important festivals among
numerous festivals that we
celebrate. Yugadi means
“ Beginning of New
age ” ( Yuga = Age and
Aadi=beginning). The day of
Yugadi is also a beginning of a
new year according to the
Hindu Panchang.
This festival is recognized by
various names across Bharat -
Varsha Pratipada, Gudi Padva,
Naba Barsha, Goru Bihu.
It is believed that, on this day,
the Universe was created by
Lord Brahma. This is the day
when Lord Vishnu incarnated
himself as Matsya (the Fish
Incarnation). On this day, Shri
Rama killed Vali. The great
Indian Mathematician
Bhaskaracharya’s calculations
proclaimed the Yugadi day from
the sunrise on as the beginning
of the New Year, new month
and new day. This day recalls
the inspiring occasion when the
kings Shalivahanaand
Vikramaditya defeated the
barbaric forces of Shakas who
came from Central Asia and
invaded Bharat during the 1st
century A.D.
We celebrate Yugadi by eating
