Ratha Sapthami is an auspicious
festival celebrated by Hindus and it
is dedicated to Lord Surya. It is
during this time that Surya moves
from the southeast to the northeast.
We worship Surya Bagwan for
better health and wellbeing. Ratha
Saptami is symbolic of the change
of season to spring and the start of
the harvesting season. For most
Indian farmers, it is an auspicious
beginning of the New Year. The
festival is observed by all Hindus in
their houses and in innumerable
temples dedicated to Surya, across
India.
In 2013, this day falls on Feb
17th.
This is also the day Surya was born
to sage Kashyapa and his wife
Aditi. Surya is considered as the
source for all life. This is why Surya
is placed at the center of the solar
system with all the other planets
orbiting around Surya. Surya deva
is also called as the king of all
planets - graharaja.
Surya deva rides on chariot that is
pulled by seven horses, the
movement of which defines time.
Hindus worship Surya deva for
