Holi is celebrated at the approach of vernal equinox on the Phalgun Poornima(Full moon). Holi marks the arrival of spring. It is also known as the festival of colors or the festival of love.

The meaning of the word 'Holi' is 'burning'.The legend of Holi is associated with demon king Hiranyakashyap who tried to burn his son since he was a worshiper of Lord Vishnu. But instead of Prahlad, Hiranyakashyap's sister 'Holika' got burnt.Lord Krishna is also associated with playing colors as the Lord started the tradition by applying color on Radha and other gopis. Gradually, the play gained popularity with the people and it became a tradition. Holi is very popular in Mathura and Vrindavan. Holi celebrations start with a 'Holika dahan' on the night before Holi where people gather, sing and dance. The next morning is called 'Dhulendi' where people play ,chase and color each other with dry powder and colored water, with some carrying water guns and colored water filled balloons.Groups carry drums and musical instruments,go from place to place, sing and dance.People move and visit their families, friends and foes.first play with colors on each other and share Holi delicacies like gujhiya, mathri, food, drinks etc.
