Story of Bhima and Hanuman

Pandavas during their exile were residing at a place called Narayanashrama. One day Draupadi saw a beautiful lotus flower with a thousand petals. It gave a very pleasant fragrance. Draupadi asked Bhima to get some more such lotus flowers. Bhima said he would get them immediately. He went in search of those flowers. He searched Gandhamadana mountains where all the varieties of flowers blossom.

On the way, in a banana grove Shri Hanuman, the great devotee of Shri Ram was sitting chanting the Lord’s name. He was Bhima’s elder brother. He saw his brother at a distance. Hanuman elongated his tail and put it across the path on which Bhima was traveling. Bhima saw it. As it was not good manners to cross any part of a living being, he saw Hanuman whom he thought was only a wild
monkey. Bhima shouted “O Monkey , remove your tail from my path” in an arrogant tone.  Hanuman replied “O Gentlemen, I am very old, I am unable to move the long heavy tail. Please move it out of the path and proceed”. Bhima tried to push the tail out of the path. But with all his might, he could not move the tail.

He then realized that the old monkey must be some great man in disguise. He then addressed the monkey “Respected Sir , you must be a great person, Please reveal your identity. I am Bhima, the son of Kunti and brother of Yudhistir” Hanuman smiled and said “ I am your brother Hanuman. The pond is very near. Go and collect the flowers”. Hanuman then withdrew his tail from the path. Bhima prostrated and said “Brother forgive my audacious behavior”.

Hanuman replied “ Brother Bhima, learn to respect old people and give up your pride of your strength. May your efforts to secure the flowers succeed”. Hanuman then again began chanting the name of Lord Rama. Bhima went to the pond, got the flowers, returned home and gave the flowers to Draupadi who felt immense joy.
