Surya - Sun God

Children we start our day with the rays of sun and if we don't see them we don't feel like getting up from the bed. The Sun is also known as Aditya, Surya, Bhanu and Ravi. The Sun is the chief solar deity in Hinduism and is also known as mitra. Surya is considered as the head of all the planets in the vedas as well as in science.

On one hand, solar energy is used for generating power and on the other hand Surya is worshipped as God. Surya is the son of Indra and is represented sitting in a chariot that is pulled by seven horses. These seven horses depict the seven seasons and the seven colours of the rainbow. There is a dynasty called as the Suryavansh dynasty. It is said that this dynasty was started by Surya dev. Lord Rama was born in this family.

Sunday or Ravivaar is the day of Surya. The three most popular temples of Surya are the Konarak in Orissa, Lolarka in Uttar Pradesh and Balarka in Rajasthan. There are many festivals that are dedicated to Surya dev such as Makar Sankranti, Chhath puja, Samba Dashami, Ratha Saptami/Surya Jayanti etc.Surya Namaskar which is mentioned in Ramayana and Mahabharata is a very powerful mantra that is recited to please the Surya dev. Surya Namaskar is not only rich in mythic belief but it has physical benefits also. It is a very good exercise for the body, mind and the soul.Let us pledge to do Surya Namaskar daily and offer our gratitude towards Surya dev.
